  • Pros

Affordable. Built-in and cloud storage. Sharp daytime image quality. Motion and audio detection.

  • Cons

Buggy app in testing. Night vision video is dark. No push notifications. Does not work with IFTTT.

  • Bottom Line

The Momentum Wi-Fi 720p Video Camera is a super-affordable home security cam that delivers sharp daytime video and offers motion and audio detection, but its mobile app is buggy and its night vision is muddy.

At $44.95, the Momentum 720p Wi-Fi Video Camera is the most affordable home security camera we've reviewed. It offers motion and audio detection, and delivered sharp daytime video and clear two-way audio in our tests. It also offers a choice of built-in or cloud storage for recorded video and photos. However, the app tends to shut down or freeze quite often, and the camera's night vision is a bit too dark. It's a good deal, but for a few bucks more, the 1080p Tend Secure Lynx Indoor camera with face recognition is a better value, and our Editors' Choice.

Design and Features

The Momentum measures 4.6 by 2.2 by 1.4 inches (HWD) and sports a two-tone black/gray finish. The camera delivers 720p video and has a 110-degree field of view, an 8x digital zoom, and 12 infrared LEDS for night vision. It also has a dual-band Wi-Fi radio, a speaker and microphone for two-way audio, and built-in motion and audio sensors. The camera sits on a round stand that provides tilt and swivel maneuverability and comes with hardware for mounting on a wall or ceiling. The back of the camera has a power jack and a reset button, and the left side holds a microSD card slot that can handle media of up to 128GB (a card is not included) for storing recorded video and photos.

If you don't want to store your video locally, you can subscribe to one of Momentum's cloud services. For $4.99 per month, the 7-Day Lite Plan gives you 7 days of storage before recordings are deleted, while the 30-Day Regular Plan gives you 30 days of storage for $9.99 per month. Both plans allow you to download and save video and photos to your mobile device.

The mobile app (available for Android and iOS) opens to a dashboard screen that displays a snapshot of the camera view and tiles for Activity and Rules. Tapping the snapshot opens a live stream with buttons along the bottom for initiating two-way audio, recording video, and taking a snapshot. There's also a button that takes you to the Activity screen where you can view a list of audio and video alerts with thumbnails of recorded video. Here you can also view videos and photos that you took using the above-mentioned buttons.

The Rules screen is where you go to configure recording events. Chose a camera and a trigger (motion or sound detection) and select specific days and times that you want the rule to run, or select All Day to have the rule run 24/7. You can have the rule send an in-app notification, but there's no provision for email or push notifications.

To add a Nest Learning Thermostat tile to your dashboard, swipe the screen to the left and tap Add. Select the Nest Thermostat from the list and link your Nest account to your Momentum account. This adds a tile to your dashboard that shows the thermostat name, current temperature seting, actual room temperature, and mode (Home, Away). Tapping the tile lets you change the mode, turn the thermostat on and off, and change the temperature setting. However, there's no way to make the thermostat trigger the camera or have the camera's motion detector trigger the thermostat, so this integration is somewhat puzzling. The Momentum lacks support for If This Then That (IFTTT) applets that allow you to create rules to have the camera work with other connected devices.

Installation and Performance

Installation was mostly easy, right up until it came time to name the camera and update the firmware. I downloaded the app, created an account, verified it via email, and proceeded to follow the on-screen instructions. I plugged in the camera and waited several seconds for the light to begin flashing red and blue, then tapped Pair Device on the welcome screen. I selected Momentum Camera from the list and used my phone's camera to scan the QR code on the back of the Momentum. I selected my home Wi-Fi SSID, entered the password, and waited around 60 seconds for the camera to connect.

I tried several times to rename the camera, but kept getting an error message. After the third try, the change took hold. Next, I used the Update Firmware button to bring the camera up to date, but received the same error message.

Once up and running, the Momentum delivers sharp 720p video with rich colors and no noticeable pincushion or barrel distortion. But black-and-white night vision video lacks contrast and appears a bit muddy past the 10-foot mark. Two-way audio is clear and moderately loud.

Camera

After installation, the motion and audio detection features did not work at all during the first day of testing but suddenly became active the following morning and worked flawlessly thereafter. I created a rule to have to the camera record video and send an in-app alert whenever sound and motion were detected between certain hours, and the rule worked perfectly. That said, you have to have to physically go to the app Alerts screen to see triggered events. I prefer the push notifications you get with cameras like the Nest Cam IQ and the Tend Secure Lynx.

I paired the camera with my Nest thermostat and had no trouble changing the temperature, turning the thermostat on and off, and switching back and forth between Home and Away modes. But as mentioned, there is no way to actually have the camera trigger the thermostat.

One of my biggest gripes with the Momentum is that the app frequently crashed or would freeze and had to be restarted, particularly when adjusting settings and creating rules. Additionally, when I used the app buttons to record video and take snapshots, they wouldn't appear in the activity list until I exited exit out of the app and reopened it. A company spokesperson confirmed that there are known issues with the app that are being addressed and will be resolved in a future firmware update.

Conclusions

If you're looking for an inexpensive Wi-Fi camera to deliver live video with two-way audio to your smartphone, the Momentum fits the bill. After a few initial hiccups, the motion and audio detection worked as advertised, and daytime video appeared sharp and colorful. I like that you can choose between a cloud subscription and storing your video locally on a microSD card. That said, night vision quality is not quite up to par, and the app needs some fine-tuning. If you can spare an additional $15, check out our Editors' Choice for affordable home security cameras, the Tend Secure Lynx Indoor. It offers face recognition technology, 1080p video, a stable app, and push notifications.

Momentum 720p Wi-Fi Video Camera

Bottom Line: The Momentum Wi-Fi 720p Video Camera is a super-affordable home security cam that delivers sharp daytime video and offers motion and audio detection, but its mobile app is buggy and its night vision is muddy.
