Striving for New Horizons
At the dawning of the 16th century, European explorers chanced upon a remote island in the Atlantic Ocean. The land was bountiful in resources, filled with fertile soil, evergreen forests, vast amounts of mineral deposits, and herds of wild sheep.

Needless to say, it was not an opportunity that could be passed up. Settlers quickly made their way to the island, now dubbed Catan, and began to establish what would eventually become a legend.
That’s how the story began in The Settlers of Catan, an award-winning board game designed by Klaus Teuber in 1995. In this game, players would take on the roles of settlers building a colony on the titular island, simultaneously working together and competing against each other. That game is now available on the computer in the form of Catan.
A Flexible Gaming Experience
Catan offers a wide level of ways to shake up its gameplay and ensure that no two games will ever be alike.
Play against up to three computer opponents.
Adjust the AI settings for your competition. Set them to play nicely, aggressively or anywhere in between.
Features a randomly-generating board. A new game yields a whole new map!
Making a Successful Colony
Catan is easy to learn. The object of the game is simply to be the first player to score ten Victory Points. Since getting Victory Points requires building settlements and cities, you better get to work!
Five different geographic tiles available, including forests, pastures, mountains, fields, hills and deserts. Each has its own unique properties.
Gather five resources: lumber, wool, grain, brick and ore.
Build settlements, cities and roads using the materials you gather.
The Economics of Catan
If you want to win Catan, then you’re going to need to get more resources than what you can scrape off the land. The only way to do that is to open up relations with your rivals.
Trade resources with your opponents.
Trade happens in real time. Don’t hesitate if a generous offer comes up, or else a quick opponent will snatch it up first.
Increase the size of your offers to entice hesitant opponents into accepting them.
Unexpected Developments
Resources are used for more than just building materials. They can also be useful for purchasing development cards. These developments can have a number of unique effects on your game.
Form your own personal army by hiring Knights. Use them to chase away pesky robbers!
Earn more potential Victory Points.
Gain access to special abilities.

Settlers of Catan (2002) is yet another fanmade PC clone of classic German board game of the same name, originally published by Kosmos Games and later in the U.S. by Mayfair Games. For anyone who's never played the game, Settlers of Catan is a board game for 3-4 players (or 5-6 with the expansion set, which this PC version doesn't include). Each player is the leader of a tribe who tries to settle on the same island as all the other tribes. Players build settlements, roads and cities on the island, using raw materials gained from the island itself, including coal, wood, and wheat. The winner of the game is the first person to reach 10 victory points, which are awarded for various empire-building actions.
Since the board is made by arranging hexagonal tiles together in a sort of random way, it's different every time you play. I find myself scanning the layout, quickly trying to figure out the perfect strategy this time around. Should I try to monopolize the ore lands and the ore port so I can produce and trade copious amounts of ore, or should I try and settle near the forests and brick quarries so I can get the goods to build roads? Should I place my first two villages close enough so I can link them later in the very long road I plan to build, or should I place them as far apart from each other as possible to minimize the danger of finding all my roads blocked off by roads belonging to other players? There is a Robber piece too! All in all, this fanmade version of Settlers of Catan is a very faithful reproduction of the boardgame classic, with competent AI and better graphics than many other fanmade PC versions, including the 1998 one you can find on this site.
