Doctor Who fans can now download episodes from BitTorrent without feeling guilty! The BBC and the peer-to-peer sharing platform have officially teamed up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the sci-fi series’ relaunch with two different BitTorrent Bundles.
BitTorrent has a pair of offerings for those looking to join the world’s growing number of Whovians. The first one, which just so happens to be free, includes a recap called “A Decade of Doctor Who – Peter Capaldi Introduction” as well as the very first episode post-relaunch, “Rose.” Both of those are offered in standard video files. The second bundle includes both of those plus the following list of premium format videos, as well as a few exclusive introductions by current Doctor Who actor Capaldi, and a documentary called Doctor Who: Earth Conquest – The World Tour all for $12. The full episode list includes “The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances” (Series 1), “The Girl in the Fireplace” (Series 2), “Blink” (Series 3), “The End of Time Parts 1 & 2” Special (Series 4), “The Vampires of Venice” (Series 5), “The Doctor’s Wife” (Series 6), “The Rings of Akhaten” (Series 7), “The Day of the Doctor” (50th Anniversary special) and “Listen” (Series 8). Basically, most of the good ones.
While this collection of episodes won’t tell the whole story or fully show new viewers why this universe continues to be incredibly popular among the sci-fi set, it does present some of the most beloved episodes in an easy-to-view, easy-to-obtain format that has the potential to rope in even more fans.
“This is a really lovely way to extend it even further so that more of our fans can get our content,” BBC Worldwide’s director of drama brands, Julia Kenyon told The Guardian. We have quite a young audience, they’re very digital-savvy, and a lot of them access content in the digital space, so understanding their habits and going where they are is very important for us.”
In that same story, BitTorrent Chief Content Officer Matt Mason discussed the company’s efforts to move into more legitimate (read: non-piracy) distribution. “The BBC are very curious about technology, and they’re not scared of it,” Mason said. “They weren’t scared about what they may have heard about the word ‘BitTorrent’ before. The BBC, and lots of people, are ready to listen.”
